Leaving the City
Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand
A challenging mountain loop west of Chiang Mai, linking valley roads, a long rolling climb, forest views and the steep Seven Switchbacks.

We rode the Samoeng Loop in February 2026, staying near Chiang Mai's Old City and heading into the mountains from town. It made a convenient base, with plenty of places to stay and eat before and after the ride.
Our route runs counterclockwise, heading north toward Mae Rim before turning west through the Mae Sa Valley. From there, the road climbs past villages and into the hills, crosses a high point near the Samoeng Forest Viewpoint, and returns through the Ban Pong and Hang Dong side of the mountains.
At around 87 kilometers, the loop packs roughly 1,500 meters of climbing into a manageable distance. Some of the steepest work comes after the highest point, so it pays to leave something in your legs for the second half.
What we enjoyed most was how often the scenery changed. Each stretch brought something different, and the ride kept feeling fresh as we worked our way around the mountains. A coffee stop along the way gave us another reason to take our time.
